Lana de Jager’s Second Spring, is a powerful and uplifting body of work redefining how Western society views menopause. Rejecting the limiting symbolism that is so often attached to ageing women in Western culture, de Jager draws inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine, where menopause is understood as a “second spring”, a period of renewal, wisdom and concentrated power.
Through a printmaking process in which etching plates are cut apart and reconfigured into new compositions, her works reflect the fragmentation and transformation of this life stage. Figures depicted from behind become universal representations of womanhood, inviting viewers to see their own experiences reflected.
Second Spring is both deeply personal and collectively resonant, celebrating menopause as an evolution to a higher state.
