Collection: Chris Lawry
Chris Lawry began her creative journey as a painter, until a chance encounter with the l’Estampe Contemporaine market in Paris in 2009 changed her course entirely. Returning to Australia, she embraced printmaking — and hasn’t looked back.
Linocut is her chosen medium. Inspiration comes from the forest near her home, from Japan’s historic Nakasendo Way, and from the photographs she captures as reference points for her work. Each print begins with sketches on the lino, exploring outlines, shading, and the cutting techniques that will best express her vision. Experimentation, lively exchanges with fellow linocut artists, and a constant curiosity all feed into her process.
Her work is shaped by the elegance of Claude Flight’s perfect lines, the quiet devastation found in Käthe Kollwitz, and the raw intensity of Otto Dix. For Lawry, linocut is not just a medium — it is a dialogue between technique, inspiration, and the deeply human stories that printmaking can tell.
