Fiona Murphy ‘Microcosm’

My mixed media reliefs express life through its details, textures or fragments as a metaphor for the world at large. I play with the idea of the microcosm to explore the interconnections that make up life within my real and imagined worlds. Transformation, fragmentation, emergence and growth, are expressed as changing states.

Water is a feature in the imagery. From years of observing reefs, tidal movements, and environmental changes- wild nature is my muse. In my works a kaleidoscope of layered patterns and textures express movement and  fragmentation.  Life is in a state of flux and transformation where coral-like forms combine with architectural forms.

Helen Kocis Edwards ‘Kindred’

Opening night Thursday 8th Aug 5.30 – 7.30pm

Helen Kocis Edwards explores human/nature relationships through imagery reminiscent of story books and fairy tales referencing the history of this integration within fables.The work seeks to disrupt the human/nature binary by interweaving and connecting figures, man-made and natural elements.

An experimental, organic, layered, print process of monoprinting using native leaf species and cut out stencils from discarded plastic integrates the pieces creating a dialogue between the parts.

Kindred poses the notion that this interconnectedness has reciprocal and beneficial effects; physically, emotionally and environmentally.

In this exhibition, artists explore depictions of wildlife and landscapes through the lenses of dreams and the unconscious. Whimsy, intellect, social consciousness, spiritualism, myth…
the grotesque, and cuddliness collectively span the spectrum of inspirations and emotions.
We see reconfigurations of the familiar into the unfamiliar. Creatures that embody a fusion of the natural world and human industry. Landscapes reflect the uncanny, sometimes elusive imagery of dreams, myth, and fantasy. Artists share a deep interest in interpreting dreams as conduits for unspoken feelings and desires. They craft stories which investigate our sense of belonging and where boundaries between reality and imagination blur, inviting contemplation and connection.

Force of Nature: Mystery in the Australian Landscape

Landscape is at the heart of Australian culture.
In this exhibition we pay homage to the artists at PG Gallery who share a deep connection to their natural surroundings. These artists explore the elusive qualities of light and weather, inviting viewers to embark on a sensory journey through evocative, atmospheric, and mysterious landscapes. Landscape art serves as a powerful conduit for the expression of emotions, transcending the mere depiction of scenery, to evoke a profound resonance with the viewer. Each artist uses their environment, evoking our awe-inspiring land; the rugged terrain, majestic forests, a deserted outback town or tumultuous sea, as a complex representation encompassing a range of projected states of being. These explorations delve into climate, history, and memory, navigating themes of trauma, grief, renewal, growth and fertility. All the while, the contemplation lingers on the enigmatic mysteries intrinsic to nature.

JENNIFER SMYTH | Monuments & Momentos

A fine art printmaker, photographer and painter, Jennifer’s work forms a nexus that explores the themes of cultural nostalgia, collective memory, societal change and urban development.

For over two decades, Jennifer has explored printmaking – from relief prints, to etchings and stone lithography. Studying printmaking at RMIT and the Australian Print Workshop, recently, Jennifer has been drawn to photogravure – the combination of photography and fine art printmaking, and is currently developing a body of work for exhibition in 2024.

Travelling through China, Japan, and Hong Kong, Jennifer captured urban landscapes of cultural and historical significance, building on her photographic portfolio with images from the dense mega cities of Philadelphia and New York. Keen to explore ancient cities, Jennifer travelled to Egypt, Palestine, Israel and Jordan, and captured some of the Seven Wonders of the World. This included the breathtaking Pyramids at Giza and the Great Sphinx. As well as Pompey’s Pillar and the Great Library at Alexandria. Further south in Aswan, Jennifer visited the hieroglyph-lined Karnak Temple and Valley of the Kings tombs, the Abu Simbel Temples, the Temple of Luxor, Phillae Temple, and the Temple of Karnak, the Temple of Horus, and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Followed by a visit to the deserts in Jordan including Wadi Musa and Petra, and the spectacular Wadi Rum – also known as the Valley of the Moon.
Seeking further travels in ancient lands, Jennifer drove around the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, exploring cities such as Riyadh and Jeddah, along with the desert at Al Ula in Medina to see the ancient tombs at Mada’in Salih.​

PESKY | Lost in Time

Lost in Time delves into themes of femininity, objectification, aging, and death by
challenging the notion of women as consumable objects and decorative pieces.
Through a combination of doll heads encased in glass domes and large
photographic portraits displayed on the gallery walls, the narrative unfolds to explore
the cycles of life, mortality, resilience, and transformation.

The artworks in the exhibition serve as a poignant commentary on the relentless
passage of time and the disposable nature of contemporary society. Once treasured
items, now forgotten and discarded, such as vintage cake stands, porcelain dolls,
and pearls sourced from thrift stores, are given new life as they are repurposed and
arranged into symbols of resilience and wisdom.

DEAN BOWEN I The Home of Love: Small Paintings and Prints

Dean Bowen is an esteemed Australian sculptor, painter and printmaker who has been exhibiting in Australia and internationally for decades. He has held one hundred solo exhibitions in Australia, France, Japan, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

His paintings and bronze sculptures address the human condition and are known for their renditions of personages, animals, urban and rural environments and quirky characters that evoke the simple pleasures of human habitation in optimistic ways within the contemporary world.

Fitzroy Painting is an artist-led independent art school located in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

The studio functions as a hub for art education and exploration, and hosts a diverse group of artists whose creative interests encompass a broad range of interests including portraiture, travel experiences, landscape and still life. Fitzroy Painters share a profound dedication to oil painting, furthering skills and knowledge, and a strong commitment to supporting one another’s creative endeavors.

Most of the artists exhibiting in this exhibition have been attending classes at Fitzroy Painting for many years, are dedicated oil painters, and are representative of the diversity of the Fitzroy Painting community.

Artist Statement:

“I am fortunate that I thrive on solitude, peace and silence. My studio is my quiet place where I get lost in my art work. My abstract landscapes are inspired by locations that I have visited and moments in time I have experienced. The sunrises and weather that I closely observe from level 5, Epworth Geelong during regular stays for pain management are a constant source of inspiration as is the surrounding landscape of the Grampians region where I live.

Art lets me enter an inner world that’s beyond words, this is my sanctuary.”
